Accelerated TMS Therapy
The typical way of doing TMS treatment for depression is to do one session a day for 5 days a week, going 4 -6 weeks to complete a course of treatment. This method of treatment is referred to as the “standard course”.
The standard course of TMS treatment may not be suitable for people with a 9 am-5 pm job or other life commitments.
By the way, it is essential to note that TMS Treatment for depression has FDA approval and NICE Guidelines recommending the treatment for its safety and efficacy in treating clinical depression.
What is accelerated TMS?
Accelerated TMS is a more intense TMS treatment that increases treatment sessions per day but treats depression in two weeks. So basically, doing 2 or 3 sessions of TMS treatment per day with breaks in between them.
The effectiveness and safety of the TMS treatment remain the same as the standard treatment protocol. One of the main benefits of the accelerated TMS is that you are reaching remission quicker compared to the standard course.
Accelerated TMS is becoming a more favourable option for people that are not able to attend for 4-6 weeks due to work or other commitments.
How does TMS work?
The brief and highly focused magnetic pulses stimulate specific regions of the brain: the left pre-frontal cortex (PFC) for the treatment of severe depression. The magnetic pulses that pass through to the brain have an excitatory effect on the left PFC, inducing brain activity. This results in a significant improvement in positive mood regulation and the executive & cognitive functions of the PFC.
