Anxiety Treatments
Before we get on to anxiety treatments, lets first briefly mention what anxiety is. The feeling of unease, worry or fear constitute the general definition of anxiety. It could be severe or it could be mild.
Thus, everyone can have feelings of anxiety at some point in life for example during exams, but this feeling of anxiousness can go away and is completely normal. However, for some people, this does not go away and their worries affect daily lives as well.
Symptoms of anxiety
Anxiety can have a variety of symptoms ranging from physiological to psychological. Also, these vary from person to person. In addition, Some common symptoms are:
- Dizziness
- Palpitations
- Restlessness
- Trouble sleeping
- Difficulty concentrating
TMS for anxiety
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive and safe way to treat anxiety and depression. Furthermore, the powerful magnetic rays are used to target areas of the brain which are known to be involved in anxiety and depression.
Additionally, people who undergo TMS have shown to report higher energy levels, better mood, and less anxiety. Therefore, TMS is usually recommended for treatment-resistant anxiety.
Talking therapy and counselling
The most standard treatment to deal with depression is talking therapy. It usually includes talking to a trained mental health professional who helps you find your triggers of anxiety. Then with time, you will be helped to fight those triggers and get over depression altogether. Furthermore, a session usually includes fining triggers and coping mechanisms.
Also, another treatment option is cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT). The aim of CBT is to recognize and alter harmful thought patterns that can trigger anxiety in a person. As a result, it helps limit distorted thinking. It also helps change the level of anxiousness and intensity of reaction toward stressors.
Self-care
In some cases, a person can control anxiety without any clinical intervention. The doctor often recommends exercise or several other techniques for short bouts of anxiety-like:
- Relaxation techniques like meditation, yoga, long baths and breathing exercises.
- Managing stress levels by decreasing triggers. Keeping an organized schedule and making to-do lists.
- Replacing negative thoughts with positive thoughts via mental exercises.
- Talking to a family member about your anxiety, especially the one who is most supportive.
- Exercising regularly can increase hormones in the human body that help fight anxiety
Medications
Several types of medications can be used for the treatment of anxiety. Also, they can be targeted to control mental or physical symptoms or both.
- Tricyclics
- Benzodiazepines
- Beta-blockers
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors
In addition, stopping any of the medications suddenly can result in side effects and any individual who plans to stop them or start them should consult their doctor in advance.
